Congratulations to our CEO Lois Buntz for being named this year’s Leadership for Five Seasons Community Trustee.
These are the comments made at the April 17, 2013, announcement, by Brad Hart, who is also on the United Way Board of Directors.
Leadership for Five Seasons has been around for nearly 30 years, preparing, supporting and inspiring individuals to go out and make a difference. I firmly believe the Leadership for Five Seasons Program is one of the most important programs of the Chamber, now the Economic Alliance. Graduates of this Program, all of you, have done much, and continue to do much, to make this Community a better place to live, work and play. Thank you.
The Leadership for Five Seasons Community Trustee Award is presented to a Leadership graduate representing the general public, acting with genuine care and competence to serve and lead the community. The recipient should also be someone committed to holding the community in trust, to both serve and lead it.
With those qualifications in mind, this year’s Leadership for Five Seasons Community Trustee is Lois Buntz, and please let me tell you why. As most of you know, Lois is the President/CEO of United Way of East Central Iowa. United Way identifies our community’s biggest needs and then provides funding and community planning services to address those needs in education, income and health. Lois’ entire career has been dedicated to serving others and her volunteer activities are outstanding. Lois served on the Recovery and Reinvestment coordinating team formed shortly after our 2008 flood, is a member of the Human Services Campus Board of Directors, serves on the Board of the Affordable Housing Network and is President of Cedar Rapids Downtown Rotary. She is also on the Executive Committee of the Non-Profit Resource Center, serves on the Women’s Leadership Conference Planning Committee and on the Cedar Rapids Community Foundation Bridge Builder Advisory Committee. Lois serves in a leadership capacity in every volunteer organization for which she commits her time and talents.
Lois is the ultimate professional, is visionary and effective in moving each organization she touches forward. Lois’ compassion and concern for others are evidenced by her career, by her many volunteer efforts and accomplishments. She has the unique ability to attract and lead her staff and community volunteers. If Lois asks, it’s very hard to say ‘no.’
I first met Lois almost 22 years ago when we attended our Leadership class’ orientation event. I’ve been a big fan ever since. Naming Lois as the 2013 Community Trustee is very fitting recognition of her efforts and leadership, and a tribute to the value of the Leadership for Five Seasons program that continues to develop terrific community leaders like Lois. Please join me in thanking Lois for all her efforts for all of us.
