Transportation
Affordable, reliable transportation is a basic need for low-income persons in order to get to and from work and for older adults to meet their basic needs and medical care. In 2002 and 2006, United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) conducted a Community Assessment that included health and human service provider focus groups, household surveys and key leader focus groups. Lack of transportation was identified as a main barrier for clients accessing health and human services in both assessments.
The number of households with no vehicle available is decreasing among rural counties for Benton and Washington County and increasing for Linn County.

Renter occupied households are more likely to have no vehicles available vs. owner occupied households.
The percentage of persons in renter occupied housing with no vehicle is higher for adult ages 65 and over for 3 out of 5 rural counties in the UWECI service area.
There are a greater percentage of households with no vehicle available among African American households.
