Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores:

 Mary Cummings:
 Wow!
 Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores:
 Are you Mary Cummings?
  Mary Cummings:
 Yes, I am.
  Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores:
Mary, I’m Marshall Peterson with Hawkeye Convenience Stores and we are one of the grand prize sponsors for the United Way Step Up program.  I am here to surprise you with $2,500 worth of gas gift cards from Hawkeye Convenience Stores.
 Mary Cummings:
 Wow!
 Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores:
Thanks for all of your work for United Way.  Congratulations!
 Mary Cummings:
You’re welcome; thank you!  My goodness.  Yes, I love gas.  I just filled up last night.  Wow!
 Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores:
 Surprise!
 Mary Cummings:
I had no idea.  Why?  Well I do like United Way.
 Benjamin Hoover, United Way:
Well we appreciate the support you’ve given us over the past 25+ years.
 Mary Cummings:
 Thank you.
 Benjamin Hoover, United Way:
 Thank you so much.
 Mary Cummings:
You’re welcome.   I gave to United Way again this year because I truly believe in the function that they perform in the community and I especially like the fact that a group of agencies go together and give through one source.  That way I feel like I can access many good causes without a lot of overhead and worrying about if I’m missing somebody.  I just like the groups that they’re with.  I say if you’re on the fence, go ahead and give this year because it’s a very good cause and you would be surprised how you can share your wealth.

United Way Donor Wins Whirlpool Appliance

Jeff Anderson, Whirlpool:

Hi my name is Jeff Anderson; I’m with Whirlpool. This is Whirlpool’s second year of donating a grand prize to United Way. Whirlpool and its employees fully support the United Way and feel that they make a huge impact in our community.

This year Whirlpool donated a Maytag Ice2O refrigerator valued at $2,900. It is my pleasure to surprise one of the United Way’s 731 Diamond Donor. A Diamond Donor is someone who has donated to the United Way for over 25 years. Let’s go see if we can find her now.

Hi Marcy Wooff. My name is Jeff Anderson. I’m with Whirlpool Amana.

Marcy Wooff:

Nice to meet you.

Jeff Anderson, Whirlpool:

Whirlpool has donated again this year to the United Way one of the grand prizes for the United Way. I’m very pleased to announce to you that you have won a four-door Maytag Ice2O refrigerator valued at $2,900.

Marcy Wooff:

Marcy Wooff:

Hey that’s awesome, that’s a nice one. Thank you!

Jeff Anderson, Whirlpool:

You are very welcome.

Marcy Wooff:

I’ve been donating to United Way for 27 years because I feel it’s a great program. There are a lot of people who aren’t as fortunate as me and I want to help them with as much as I can in whatever way that I can.

I would encourage people to donate to United Way because, again, there are people that are less fortunate than all of us and they have very good programs.

I love the prize. I can’t wait to get it in my home. It’s great; I’m very excited!

Dennis Kelly, Smulekoff’s:

My name is Dennis Kelly from Smulekoff’s Furniture here in Cedar Rapids. We are here today to go give a gift to a Cargill employee who donated to the United Way. We made this donation in order to inspire others to give with the hope that the more that is donated, the more it can help others in the community.

We’re going to surprise Jacob and let’s see how it works out. I’m sure he will be thrilled.

Jacob?

Jake Zoss:

Yes.

Dennis Kelly, Smulekoff’s:

My name is Dennis Kelly from Smulekoff’s Furniture in Cedar Rapids. You generously donated to United Way recently I understand. We’re here to give you a wonderful gift, and we’re honored to do it.

Jake Zoss:

Thank you.

Dennis Kelly, Smulekoff’s:

It’s a wonderful set of bedding—one of the best we sell—and it’s yours.

Jake Zoss:

Wow! Thank you!

Dennis Kelly, Smulekoff’s:

Thank you very much, we appreciate it.

Question: Why do you give to United Way?

Jake Zoss:

Cargill’s United Way campaign. When I first started they had their United Way campaign and through their encouragement and their dollars matching program, I decided to give and I’ve been doing it ever since.

I donate to United Way because I feel it’s the right thing to do. It’s good and a fairly easy way to give back to the community. They support several organizations. I’m sure there are several people I know that have taken advantage of those services.
