Longtime United Way Donor Wins November Prize
In 2012, we were able to give prizes to acknowledge donors to our annual campaign.
One winner was drawn each month September through November 2012. All donors were automatically entered into the drawing.* (Each prize was donated.)
Mary Cummings, an employee at the Grant Wood Area Education Agency in Cedar Rapids and a longtime United Way supporter, won the November prize – $2,500 worth of gas cards donated by Hawkeye Convenience Stores.

Longtime United Way Donor Wins November Prize
Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores: I’m Marshall Peterson with Hawkeye Convenience Stores here in Cedar Rapids. Hawkeye has been a part of the United Way Step Up program since the program began three years ago and we’re thrilled to be back again this year as a grand prize donor. Today, we’re at the Grant Wood AEA to surprise the winner of our grand prize, which is $2,500 worth of gas gift cards at Hawkeye Convenience Stores. We’re very excited; this program has been a big success for United Way. Let’s go find our winner right now and give her a big surprise! Mary Cummings: Wow! Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores: Are you Mary Cummings? Mary Cummings: Yes, I am. Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores: Mary, I’m Marshall Peterson with Hawkeye Convenience Stores and we are one of the grand prize sponsors for the United Way Step Up program. I am here to surprise you with $2,500 worth of gas gift cards from Hawkeye Convenience Stores. Mary Cummings: Wow! Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores: Thanks for all of your work for United Way. Congratulations! Mary Cummings: You’re welcome; thank you! My goodness. Yes, I love gas. I just filled up last night. Wow! Marshall Peterson, Hawkeye Convenience Stores: Surprise! Mary Cummings: I had no idea. Why? Well I do like United Way. Benjamin Hoover, United Way: Well we appreciate the support you’ve given us over the past 25+ years. Mary Cummings: Thank you. Benjamin Hoover, United Way: Thank you so much. Mary Cummings: You’re welcome. I gave to United Way again this year because I truly believe in the function that they perform in the community and I especially like the fact that a group of agencies go together and give through one source. That way I feel like I can access many good causes without a lot of overhead and worrying about if I’m missing somebody. I just like the groups that they’re with. I say if you’re on the fence, go ahead and give this year because it’s a very good cause and you would be surprised how you can share your wealth.Prizes:
