Free income tax assistance is provided by VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). These IRS sponsored programs provide free, high quality federal and state income tax assistance with preparation for low to moderate income individuals and families. United Way 2-1-1 connects those in need with services provided by VITA and AARP.

The VITA program was created to promote awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) - a refundable federal tax credit that helps low to moderate income individuals offset taxes, supplement low wages, and provide a work incentive.
AARP Tax-Aide program provides assistance to low- and middle-income taxpayers with special attention to those ages 60 and older. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.
We are seeking volunteers willing to work in Linn, Black Hawk, Jones, and Iowa counties in Iowa for the 2015 tax season. (Recruitment for the 2014 tax season has ended.)
Previous experience is not required. We are looking for enthusiastic people with a passion to help others.
In person trainings are offered in mid-December and at your own pace online .
Volunteers will be asked to commit two to six hours a week during the 2015 tax season. Commitment varies at each site.
Help taxpayer through the complete tax preparation, review and electronic filing process. Bilingual tax preparers are also needed (Spanish-speaking).
Participate in IRS tax training and complete intermediate level certification
Welcome people and prepare them for their tax appointments.
