Veterans In Volunteerism

Both a Cause and Solution

United Way of East Central Iowa is featuring Veterans in Volunteerism. This is a new perspective for our community to look at veterans; seeing them not only as a cause but also as a solution. We are highlighting some opportunities with local non-profits and veteran-based organizations for our community to serve veterans and empower veterans to serve in local community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where did United Way get this idea?

We presented at a national conference and had the opportunity to listen to a panel of veterans. One of the more youthful veterans challenged a room full of volunteer coordinators and professionals to look at veterans as both a cause and solution. It was a shame on me moment, we weren’t doing a good job of that.

What are some of the opportunities?

We have opportunities for all ages and abilities. Kiddos can color pictures for veterans, families can collect donations, veterans can connect and converse with other veterans, you can build ramps for veterans, and veterans can train to staff an Emergency Volunteer Center in the event of another disaster.

How can the community get involved?

Go to the United Way of East Central Iowa Website then click on the Veterans in Volunteerism link. You will be able to browse a number of featured opportunities. Additional community-wide volunteer opportunities can be found on United Way’s Volunteer Now website.
